Linda Pohl asked whether there is an answer to a question posed by an ill
baby's mother, about this.
There probably is, but I think the question itself must prompt more
questions.
How about exploring with mother the particular reason she is asking about
this? Linda, you saw baby on day 13. By your description many things must
have gone terribly wrong on days 0-12. Is mother looking for a reason to
seek redress for bad care which led to her baby's starved and jaundiced
condition when you saw them? Or is she filled with guilt at the thought
that she has somehow hurt her own child? Has she been following some kind
of ideologically based schedule of feeds? Is she being threatened with loss
of custody for not supplementing? It sounds too early to say whether
lasting damage has occurred, and I would definitely help her focus on
whatever tangible signs there are that the baby is functioning
neurologically normally. If there are no signs of normalcy, she of course
should be referred to the appropriate clinician in an honest way.
Good luck. And let us know how it turns out.
