Rachel,
Thanks for your post. I changed the subject line slightly, so that people
trying to follow the thread would be able to access your post as part of the
thread ( I hope.) Of course, this is not a cultural issue, so much as a
'subcutural' issue, since there are plenty of American Christians who would never do
this in an eternity of years. Following what you were saying, I would sheepishly
suggest that you invite the Pearls to Norway during the peak of tomato season.
Of course, it wouldn't change their minds, but ...

<< For the record, as an item of cross-cultural curiosity, if a Norwegian
teacher
 or a PHN or a doctor or any of the professionals who are required by law to
 report suspected cases of child abuse were to get wind of families 'training'
 their own children in this way, the parents could easily lose custody of
their
 children.  It's against the law to hit children here, even with a bare, open
 hand, and certainly with a willow switch.  This book would be loudly
condemned
 by every public authority in Scandinavia, I believe, and the authors would be
 pelted with rotten tomatoes if they ever tried to visit on a promotional
tour. >>
