Winnie asks,

Marsha (and anyone else), do you know if this is documented
somewhere, or is it just one of those things we have all heard
"somewhere"?

Winnie, for what it is worth, one of the formula reps told me this himself
back in the late 70's or early 80's when I was still in MI and head nurse of the
Family Birthing Center -- before I moved to the Chicagoland area and became
an IBCLC. We were standing in line for a lunch at something or other, and I'll
never forget him saying, "Well, Jan, you know that the breastfeeding mother
is the formula company's best friend. We'll make far more money off her than
we ever will off a woman who starts out bottle feeding."

So yes, hearsay, I guess....but I heard it from the mouth of one of the
uppermost horses in one of the uppermost formula companies.....
