Lactnetters,

Follow up on a situation I posted last week or so. Any responses can come to me and I will forward on to Charity.

Hello!

Some of you have heard the long version of my recent breast challenges. The short version is that I am recovering from mastitis and had a breast abscess surgically drained last week. The drain came out this morning and now we need the drain sites to start healing. My surgeon is concerned about a fistula forming because of the milk leaking through the drain sites. In two weeks I go back to the surgeon to see how healing is progressing. The only option the surgeon is aware of to prevent a fistula from forming is to wean. He is open to options and we can certainly try weaning from one side. He will be consulting with one of his colleagues this week who is a breast specialist.

I'm writing to ask if anyone has any ideas how to prevent a fistula without weaning. Or, if anyone is of the opinion that risking a fistula is a better option than weaning. I will happily take personal stories and anecdotes, but an opinion with credentials would be awesome! Let me know if you have any ideas or if anyone you know has ideas! Please feel free to share my story with anyone who might be able to help!

Hopefully, the site will just heal appropriately and we won't have to deal with a fistula!!!

Thanks!
Charity
