Subject: [LACTNET] Kathy Dettwyler is now a grandmother!!!

Thanks to everyone who provided contacts, support, and advice while Miranda
was hospitalized in Germany for early labor contractions (due to an
infection of some kind).

Miranda did manage to stay pregnant for the duration (due date window was
June 28-July 4). On Monday, July 3rd, Miranda gave birth to my first
grandchild, Henry Graham Hannam. He was born in the birthing center in
Jena, Germany, with a midwife in attendance. No labor/delivery drugs, no
bath, no silver nitrate, no circumcision, no separation from mother and
father, oral Vitamin K instead of an injection. He was 8 lbs. 4 oz., 21"
long, lots of dark hair and chubby cheeks. He nursed right away -- like a
champ -- and was in a "quiet alert" state for about four hours after the
birth. They went home about 4.5 hours after the birth. He slept for 6
hours straight the first night, in between mom and dad. Nursing is going
great, and Miranda is head over heels in love with him, as is Mark. The
midwife visits every day for a few days, and the pediatrician does house
calls as well. I must say, Germany is a very civilized country.
