Hi everyone,
I've been lurking far too long, but now need some of your collective wisdom.
I'm working with a mom and her 7 day old who is a quadraplegic. Dad is very
involved, and his the primary person helping with latch on, positioning, etc.
 Her injury level is C5/C6.
Right now we're struggling with low milk supply. The baby nurses
beautifully, but not a lot of swallowing, and is now being supplemented.
When mom is pumping, she only gets about 1 oz. total during the 20 minutes of
pumping--even with almost continuous massage and compression.
My thoughts are lack of nerve stimulation for the pituitary to secrete
oxytocin and prolactin due to the injury. Thankfully, she is not
experiencing any dysreflexia symptoms when nursing. Has anyone else had any
experience in this? I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Peg Phillips, RN, BSN, IBCLC
