My name is Falle Petrino, and I am a nursing student at Ivy Tech Community
College of Indianapolis. I was recently reading about the occurence of
mastitis in lactating women and have found varying statistics. According to
our text book, the incidence is 3-5% of lactating women. However, La Leche
League states the rate of occurence at about 2.5%, while WHO states that it
can be as high as 33% (though it usually remains below 10%). I was just
curious to know whether anyone either works at a facility where this has been
studied recently or has any current data about it. All of the statistics I have
come across are from the 1990s. In my own experience, it seems like this
condition is very common among lactating women. However, I would like
statistics to back that opinion up. I would also like to know if the occurence
of mastitis in the U.S. has any regionally related factors. (For instance, is it
more prevalent in the midwest, east coast, etc. and what is the most common
cause in those areas.) Thanks in advance for any information you may have.
