Healthy-e learning posted a study on nipple shield use where the study was
done in a hospital clinic staffed only by experienced IBCLC's. 12 month
period. 1218 women seen with problems but only 44 were given shields. Half
of those babies gained weight of at least 1 oz, 25 % lost weight and 22
remained at same weight; This gives a total of 47 % with failure to thrive.
I am wanting to post this study to get acrossed to our staff that nipple
shields are not the first route to go when helping a baby who won't latch in
the first 24 hours...:( or so. However, I threw away my bibliography page
and can't reference the study. Does any one know the one I am talking
about?

No, I don't know the study, but would LOVE to have a copy of it. I did
the nipple shield clinical workshop at ILCA this last week, and someone
mentioned that someone had mentioned a study similar to this, and I'm eager to
read it. Really want to know what kind of shields were used, how they
ascertained that the no weight gain or loss of weight was related to n.s. use,
and not low supply on the part of the mom, etc. So if anyone knows what
study this is referencing, you have at least two people that want it!!
