Hi Patricia:)

Excellent point.  Another consideration with regard to the 80's is that the silicone nipple shields we know today are not the same one's that were available in the 80's. Especially the early to mid 80's.  One of the older types was made of  thick rubber and had one maybe two tiny holes at the end.

       There was a piece about nipple shields written and published in "Birth" in the 80"s that discusses the references and the research mentioned. I do not have the issue handy but will locate if someone wants the reference. The bottom line is that the research used to give nipple shields the bad rap are very weak.....
