This is called a ''grass belly'' in Dutch and is in horses due to a protein
overload and can cause severe colic.
I think it is similar to lactose overload, where it is the relative shortage
of fat in relation to lactose is the real culprit. In horses it is, I think
the relative shortage of rough carbohydrates and fibers in relation to
proteins.
