Ruth Lawrence discusses this relationship in her book under the section
"Emergency Weaning." I have the blue 1989 version, so the newer edition may
be different. She explains, "Prolactin has been associated with a feeling of
well-being; thus its decrease may be associated with relative depression." I
knew about this because of a client who contacted me last year with a history
of depression. She asked if there was a link. Weaning at about 15 months
brought about increased severity of symptoms. Her doctor told her it had
nothing to do with weaning, but she said the same thing had happened with her
older child 12 years earlier.
