One thing to remember is that when antifungal are started the candida starts
to die off and the patient feels worse for a few days. I believe it releases
a toxin as it dies off. And from what I remember of what Dr. Hale said in
October, that antifungals don't kill the yeast, they stop it from
reproducing. So it takes some time. He also said that these cases where mom
is not getting better after weeks and weeks of antifungal treatment are
probably not yeast. The problem is we don't really know what is going on in
many of these cases. Or so I remember and I hope I got this right!

The speed of relief depends on the kind of medication used. Nystatin kills
yeast on contact, so it's only as effective as the frequency and skill of
its administration. There are lots of hiding spaces inside a little baby's
mouth. Diflucan, OTOH, acts as a "birth control" for yeast, preventing it
from multiplying; most existing yeast die off within first few days of
treatment and then improvement is noted. Because it's systemic, however,
skill of application isn't an issue.

Using Nystatin is more likely to give a die-off reaction, such as headache,
stomach upset, gassiness, diarrhea than using Diflucan, since it's a more
immediate effect. With Diflucan, the remaining yeast die a more "natural"
death so there aren't so many of them exploding and releasing their toxins
at once.

I do agree with Kathy wholeheartedly that more extensive treatment needs to
be made besides just administering medication. The Standard American Diet,
or SAD as it's more appropriately called, is a yeast cell's dream; throw in
the very common lack of sleep and too much caffeine and stress, and it's a
wonder more moms aren't fighting thrush.
