Dear Becky, how long do moms stay in recovery? This might be the important
factor. If it's one hour from delivery, there isn't much time really to
get it all together. And so much is going on etc. However, if it's 2
hours they have no excuse! You said baby "in room". That's not where baby
needs to be. Baby needs to be "in arms" - mom's that is. Skin-to-skin and
all that stuff that encourages latch-on. Remember most of the studies show
baby ready to nurse within 1st hour, by 2 hours baby is ready for a nice
nap and sometimes doesn't wake to really nurse well again for a looonnngg
time.

One hosp I'm familiar with, doesn't move mom out of recovery until baby has
completed first successful latch-on and nursed a while. Their excellent
criteria for when mom/baby ready to go to PP. In many "baby factories" tho
the criteria is exact time since delivery. And unfortunately there are a
lot of "nursing" (RN) tasks that need to be done in that time. Of course
I'm of the opinion that you get mom and baby together, bonding with dad,
nursing etc. and then RN is free to do the blessed paperwork while they are
all cozy and do their thing without interference and interruption. Or you
deliver at home and forget the paperwork!!! Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
