Hi! This is my first post to the list although I have been lurking for a
couple of weeks. I am an LLL Leader and I am studying for the LC exam in
2002.

I had a mom who had multiple cases of mastitis. Baby would resist taking the
affected breast and when baby did nurse on that breast, she would spit up the
feeding. Finally mom weaned on that breast (continued nursing on other
breast only), but still continued to have repeated bouts of mastitis. We
went through everything we could think of for her. She did have a course or
2 of antibiotics.

Finally I suggested that the doctor culture her milk. She had a strep
infection in that breast! They gave her a different antibiotic that will
hopefully clear up the strep infection. Baby is now 10 months old.

We are guessing that she picked up the strep infection in the hospital when
baby was born. There were complications and baby was in the hospital for
several days. Mom pumped there for baby. The symptoms were there from very
early on.
