National Breastfeeding Campaign
The Minister for Health and Children, Micheál Martin launched the
Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign on 30 September 2003. This launch coincides with the
beginning of National Breastfeeding Week and aims to increase awareness amongst
the general population about the importance of breastfeeding and how it
benefits babies, their mothers and society generally.
The week-long campaign consists of television and press advertisements
promoting breastfeeding to the general population, with the theme: “There are
Reasons Why Breast is Best”. The TV advert. features the everyday reality of
breastfeeding for families and highlights its main benefits. The Press advert is
aimed at the general population, particularly young people. It takes a more
light-hearted approach to raising awareness of the value of breastfeeding. The
advertising elements of the campaign are being supported by a highly visible
public relations campaign. This will consist of media relations, an information
website (www.healthpromotion.ie/breastfeeding), and an information booklet “
Feeding your Baby”. Awareness raising events have also been planned. These
include a media photo-call with the Olympic Silver Medallist and mother of two
breastfed children, Sonia O’Sullivan who is adding her support to the campaign. The
Minister will also acknowledge Aer Rianta’s efforts to become more
breastfeeding friendly by formally presenting breastfeeding promotional posters to Mr.
Robert Hilliard, Aer Rianta manager at Dublin airport. Copies of the poster
will be displayed in all the nurseries in the 3 Aer Rianta airports.
