Dear Lactnetters,
Perhaps you remember me posting last fall about a pregnant woman who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank God she is doing well. Very soon after the birth she had to begin chemo and stop nursing. For the entire time that she was being treated she did everything to maintain breastfeeding. She pumped religiously, she fed her baby girl according to her cues and slowly. Baby was always in her arms and skin to skin as much as possible and breastfed as much as possible by a close friend in order to remember what a breast is all about. Baby received only donor milk. Not a drop of abm. Mom began breastfeeding as soon as Dr. Hale, via Diane Wiessinger, gave the O.K. and was in heaven. She has since been breastfeeding with a lactaid, through surgery and radiation treatment and a week ago was able to give up the lactaid. Baby is 7 months old. Now her oncologist is insisting that she starts on tamoxifen and wean immediately. Needless to say, this mother is heart broken. My ancient Hale, 1999, makes it pretty clear that a breastfeeding mother should not be taking this but that there is a lot we don't know about it. Maybe someone has updated info on this product, or knows of an alternative. Maybe there is an oncologist in the group? Is there any way out of this?? Her oncologist no longer has any sympathy for her desire to continue breastfeeding.
Thank you ahead of time,
Chayn Fogelman Israel IBCLC
