I need some help/advice. One of my Peer Counselors has a mother who was
given a depo shot the day after delivery. The doctor convinced the mother
that it wouldn't have any effect on her milk supply, so she agreed to the
shot. I've had the mother go in to the health department to weigh the baby
weekly (baby is 2 weeks old now). I don't have my notes here at home with
me and I don't remember the exact weight, but when he was weighed Thursday
he'd lost 2 oz. I had the Peer Counselor call back to be sure the baby was
weighed on the same scale and with no clothes on both times (don't know the
answer to that, yet) and we're having the mother bring the baby back in
Monday for another wieght check.

Now, the baby is 2 weeks old so we're going to have the usual 2-week growth
spurt business going on (mom says baby is fussy and seems hungry--past couple
of days). Thing is, this can be the growth spurt, mom worrying bec. of the
depo shot, or "real." My question is--does depo ALWAYS affect milk
production? Will she definitely need to supplement? Can we wait till
Monday? Right now, I've suggested that over the weekend she nurse more
frequently, let baby finish first side at each feeding, and breast
compression to get even more hind milk. If weight is the same on Monday--no
loss, no gain--then what? If weight is more are problems over? If weight is
less is it the depo? I haven't seen the mother myself, yet, so don't know
what breastfeeding looks like, but if the weight is the same or less I'll
definitely go see for myself--plus have mother take baby to doctor right
away. Please post privately and to the list with your suggestions. Thanks.
 Keitha :)
