Barbara, you comment about the pump use in the hospital stay and the lack of
hygiene taught to moms to prevent mastitis.  I too teach the cleansing of the
wound with soapy water if necessary, though I don't recall the last time I've
had a mother with a wound in the early days of lactation if she's hired me as
her LC.  But, my question is, I have heard from many of my moms that triple
antibiotic ointment is recommended for application on the nipples when sore and
cracked.  I presume it's for the same reason; namely to prevent infection.  I
have tried to search for a reference citing the use of triple antibiotic
ointment for the management of cracked nipples in the early days of breastfeeding
and can't seem to find it.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!
