Jennifer, while you made what you felt was a wise choice based on 
your knowledge of your individual infant, the research is extremely 
clear. SIDS rates dropped by as much as 75% in populations (including 
some of the US) when recommendations changed from front sleeping to 
back sleeping for young infants. This is not a comfort issue but a 
life saving one.  It is possible to work out the number of infants 
who have not died in the years since the Back to Sleep campaigns 
began. The numbers are comparable to results of car seat laws.  I 
shudder to think how many infants we in health care killed by telling 
moms infants 'must' sleep on their tummies (or sides). Of course 
population studies are wonderful and don't necessarily apply to every infant.
	We do have increased knowledge on the mechanism of many SIDS deaths 
and in many cases it is the depth of the sleep that causes the 
problems.  It is the very fact the infants do NOT sleep as deeply and 
rouse more often that is protective for some infants...it is also one 
of the protective mechanisms in co sleeping in a safe environment.
	I make a point of telling grandmothers that they are correct. Their 
grandchild is likely to sleep longer if placed on their front, 
unfortunately they are also less likely to wake up :(
