behaviors of bottle feeding babies is spot on. I'm sure we've all had the
horrific experience of watching a parent take delight in bottle feeding a
child who was absolutely SUFFERING through the feeding."
Laura,

Yes, Laura, I know what you mean - babies guzzling down the contents of a
bottle because of being unable to control the flow (e.g. a slight tongue tie
or other reason), and the parent or other adult present saying, "Look at how
much s/he he is taking - must want it." Yet they are ignoring the look of
sheer panic on the poor baby's face, as s/he has literally to swallow or
drown. Then, when the baby cries a couple of hours later, with discomfort,
it is taken as a sign hunger - and so the cycle goes, round and round. Why,
or why, don't adults see the panic in the baby's eyes?

I've seen this happen with bottle nipples that are alleged, in their
advertising, to deliver liquid only in response to a suck. Yet sometimes a
baby can be flooded with milk, even if s/he can't make a very good seal.
Adults can't seem to see it, accepting the printed word (from the
manufacturer) as factual.

A bit of healthy skepticism is sorely needed to counter the effect of
promotion on perception.
