Can you stand one more thought on the subject? I had intended to
include this with my previous thoughts, but got sidetracked.
I like the comment about a new mom only needing 3 bits of
knowledge-how to get baby on so it doesn't hurt, how to get baby off
so it doesn't hurt, and when and where to get help. I would
wholeheartedly agree with one caviat: The first thing she needs is
to have her own burning questions answered. For example, I may want
to talk with her about how to get baby latched effectively, but
suppose she just talked with a friend who went on and on about how
she had so much trouble getting her baby to take a bottle so she
could go back to work and how this mom MUST start teaching the
bottle right away or she will have the same problem. The new mom
won't hear anything I say until this worry has been addressed. I
may think it's preposterous to be worrying about that at this stage
of the game, but we must meet each mom where she's at, then lead
her to what we want her to know. The first questions after
introducing myself to a new mom are "How's it going?" and Before I
go over some information, what questions do yor have. Each
individual teaching session with a mom is unique. The content,
order of info, and emphasis must meet her needs at that time (not
mine) or none of it will sink in!
