Hi Bettina,
The concern here is that the baby may contract the strep throat, right?
So it helps to remember that:
1) The baby was already exposed before the mother was diagnosed.
2) The mother's breastmilk contains antibodies to the illness.
3) Penicillin is compatible with breastfeeding (AAP, Lawrence, Hale,
etc.).
4) Lawrence states that breastfeeding 'may resume after 24 hours of
therapy'.
I'd like to argue about whether any separation/pumping was necessary in
this case, but the most important thing at the moment is that, since the
mother started treatment, she should be able to get her baby back to the
breast now, without waiting a week.
