Hi! I have been lurking on the list for about a year now and wanted to
introduce myself. My name is Sarah Hand and I have been a LLL Leader for
over 7 years now and was accredited as an IBCLC in 2002. I live in Maryland
and we have three boys ages 12, 9, and 7. I don't always have time to read
the LACTNET posts, but have found them very interesting and informative when
I do.

I have a question about breastfeeding and a head lice medication called
Ovide and have the mom's permission to post. I have checked the archives
and found nothing on this specific medication ( I think it is fairly new).
The Mom and her 3 year old have lice and were given this medication. The
Mom put it on her hair and then panicked thinking it could be a problem
with breastfeeding her infant. So she calls the doctor who tells her that
the med is new and she has no info concerning this med and breastfeeding so
mom should pump and dump for a few days then go back go breastfeeding. She
already supplements and felt she could deal with the pumping and dumping for
a few days but is concerned that nobody knows if this is safe to use with
breastfeeding and whether or not a few days of pumping and dumping would be
enough. She only left it on for 20 minutes - the directions say 8 - 12
hours. The medication contains a chemical called malathion.

If anyone has information about this medication it would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks,
Sarah Hand, LLLL, IBCLC
