The literature suggests that until the 1970's most preterm infants were fed
banked mature human milk. (See Lois Arnold's monograph) When preterm
formulas came out "we" achieved better growth, less rickets, etc. but at a
price: lactobezoars, increased NEC, brain damage from too much protein. The
AIDS issue nailed the coffin on donor milk for a while (would you believe
that many docs don't know that donor milk is pasteurized?), as CMV is
threatening to do now.

It is my personal belief that ALL infants deserve breastmilk, and that it is
malpractice to start any infant <1500 gms on anything else. It is my
personal mission to convince all neonatologists of this. I would love to use
nothing but breastmilk for even the tiniest infants. I do not believe the
research supports this at present.

I have no personal knowledge of the NICUs in Zimbabwe, but I doubt the
country has the resources (both perinatal and neonatal) to support borderline
pregnancies and infants like we do in the USA. No country, including Sweden,
can match the birthweight-specific survival rates found in the US.
