Our hospital policy is: we place bath buckets full of ice in the patients' rooms. Milk can be stored there until family takes home. Ice is readily available as are bath buckets. We give the moms 2 buckets - one for washing their equipment in, the other for ice and storage.

Subject: Hospital policy for milk storage

I work at a cancer hospital where we care for breastfeeding patients and lactating patients. We are not a maternal/child facility (no labor/delivery or NICU; PICU only). We are attempting to create a policy for breastmilk storage. While we can mirror other policies, we don't have the typical set up with a refrigerator in a NICU or nursery. We cannot store it in the medication fridge or the pantry fridge. Any suggestions?
