I have never heard of a mother with sickle cell trait being told they
couldn't breastfeed.  The baby's blood count can be monitored and he or she
can get iron supplement, if necessary.  Once past pregnancy these moms are
usually not very anemic.  I have several patients with SCT who bf and I've
noted no unusual problems......V. Nichols-Johnson, MD
