over the years this has popped up periodically. I believe it is wrong. Almroth in 1978 wrote about Water requirements of breastfed infants in hot climates. Am J Clin Nutr, 31:1154-57. Her research showed that breastmilk provided all the water a baby needs. "Actually, in many areas of the world, supplementary water is a route for disease bacteria." So it's a great thing that water isn't needed. She wrote again in 1990 that No need for water supplementation in exclusively breastfed infants under hot and arid conditions. Trans. R. Soc. Trop. Med and Hygiene 84: 602-604. In 1991 Sachdev wrote about no need, WHO also wrote in 1991 about no need. Ashraf wrote in 1993,. In 1998 Wellstart in California prepared a research paper on 8 studies from various areas in the world and 100% said no water necessary.

The CBI RL has a VERY fat file about supplementation of water for exclusively breastfed babies and all the articles say not needed! Some of the articles say can interfere with lactation duration. Please pass this info on to HCPs who need to know :-)
