Forgive the awkward subject. I am following up an old post in which I
could not find a reference, with the long-overdue citation, and I
wanted it to be findable in the archives.

When an infant suckles at the breast "there is a large outpouring of 19
different gastrointestinal hormones in both the mother and infant . . .
which stimulate growth of the baby's and mother's intestinal villi and
increase the surface area and the absorption of calories with each
feeding (Kennell and Klaus 7)."

 From http://home.aol.com/davisrnclc/myhomepage/commerabm.htm

and the footnote in detail is on
http://home.aol.com/davisrnclc/myhomepage/workscited.htm#K

Just another reason to breastfeed :)
