Dear Lactnetters-

At our Health Dept. we are trying to standardize info we give to parents on
what the normal number of stools is for breastfed babies in the first few
weeks. I would love to have input from any of you on this topic. What do you
tell parents? What research (if any) is your information based on? When do
you advise parents to seek help in the first week or so- if no stool in 24
hours or longer?

Many doctors in our area are not as up to date on stooling patterns for
breastfed newborns as they should be, and we've heard many say not to worry
if a baby hasn't had a stool for several days in the first week (we advise
parents to get help/assessment if no stool in 24 hours). Do any of you have
references you could recommend to these docs to ensure they are giving
correct information?

Thanks
