Roni and Friends,

Lamaze is most certainly working at the epidural epidemic -- Roni, if
you're an FACCE you're part of the "They"! But it's sort of like all us
IBCLCs working on the breastfeeding rates: we all need to keep slogging
along, and I can tell you from conversations at the most recent Lamaze
International conference that Lamaze teachers agonize over the same
sorts of issues that we do.

Lamaze International has just started and "Institute for Normal Birth" -
interesting that as we are all writing furious letters to get a
perceived negative campaign going, they are taking the positive side
tack. You can check this out at
http://normalbirth.lamaze.org/institute/about/TheInstitute.asp

And as always...."they" can't do it, we must! I volunteered to be
Vermont Lamaze coordinator. I'd suspect there's already a New York
coordinator but I'm willing to bet there are other volunteer positions
open.

Also check out Passion for Birth, Terri Shilling's offering for lowering
the epidural rate. (She was conference coordinator this year and did a
great job.) http://passionforbirth.com/page.cfm?pageid=384

Plenty of work to be done.....last year, in a room of 400 women, less
than ONE THIRD had ever seen a normal birth as defined by these
standards. It's a wonder the breastfeeding rates are going up...
