As I understand it (and not a lot is known about the true etiology of SIDS) is that tobacco use in the mother not only suppresses arousal reflexes in the baby, but particulate matter in the air, even when mom "smokes outside" and the particulate matter is carried in the house on her body, clothes and hair, is a risk. 

When our 36 week preterm baby was born, we were advised not to use our fireplace the first winter due to the increase in particulate matter in the air.
