HI All,
I have an interesting case I'd like to get some feedback on. There is some
info I am missing, but am in the process of trying to get. This case is
past history (happened 32 years ago) so I know we cannot get any definite
answers, but speculations would be great. Here goes:
Baby born 7 lbs 7 oz . No drugs with labor or delivery (as L & D lasted all
of one hour). Baby BF for 3.5 months but spit up frequently. Mom says baby
couldn't keep anything down, Dad says baby kept breastmilk (and other ABMs)
down, just spit up frequently, every 10-15 min or so (Dad said no vomiting).
Baby not doing well, Drs had mom change diet (can you believe it, 32 yrs
ago??) with no effect. Baby still spitting up frequently, weight gain not
very good. Parents took baby to several Drs who all told them baby would
outgrow the problem. At 3.5 mo mom quit BF (cold turkey) and tried ABM (2
brands S***L*C, and E***M*L) and Goats milk, but baby still spitting up
frequently. Baby losing weight, but parents didn't see it as they had Drs
telling them that baby was fine and they couldn't really tell how bad the
baby was getting as they saw her all the time (you know what I mean?). (Dad
says baby ate like a horse, but didn't seem to get any nourishment form what
she ate.) But they knew something was wrong. Went to visit grandma, who
took one look at baby and rushed to Ped who put baby on Pr**b**. (Baby was
seriously malnourished and close to death, maye1-2 wks left) Baby stopped
spitting up and started gaining weight, is now healthy 32 yr old.

What do you think, given this info? Was baby allergic to something in the
milks (breastmilk, and ABM) that the soy-ABM didn't have? What would cause
a baby to eat a lot, but not get the nourishment the way this baby appears
to have done? What was so different about soy-ABM back then that would
totally change a baby's digestive system to start processing and keeping
nourishment to survive?
Please e-mail any thoughts on this privately ( [log in to unmask] ) as well
as to the list.
OK, I'll let you in on a thinly veiled secret...the baby is me, and I have
worked for 3 years to get this info from my parents. (just found out 2 wks
ago that I was BF for 3.5 months...mom very defensive about the issue) I am
interested in this situation, not only because it affected me, but because I
am genuinely curious as to what may cause this type of situation. It may
explain similar problems I had with my first son.
Thanks all!
