Oh hi..I have been peacefully lurking in the background... I am an RN ..I
teach nursing actually and based on my personal experiences with
breastfeeding felt I needed toknow lots more so I joined lacnet. I was
going to come out of the lurk closet anyways so that the group would know
that I had nothing to do with ABM, but I am out of the closet on the
editorial by Ms. Nancy Eshelman in the Patriot News. It really ticked me
off....if the woman was trying to be outlandish just to provoke a
reaction she has my apolgies, but it doesn't sound like it..sounds like
that editorial expressed her true beliefs..

So...from 4000 miles away I wrote a response to the editor..the global
village who would have thought. I sent a copy to Kathleen Bruce just so
she would know what I said.....

She though lactnet might like to read it..so her it goes. As a
preface...the comments in the response are directed at Ms. Eshelman
solely they are not a slam on any US citizen except for Ms. Eshelman...I
strongly believe in the global village ..and I do not wish to start a
political volley...Regards...

Subject: Re: Editorial on Breastfeeding in Public...Ms. Nancy Eshelman

Well, one can only assume from your editorial...considering the
outrageous nature of your diatribe on breast feeding in public that you
were trying to provoke a reaction. I suppose if that was your intent
then congratulations are in order.

Yuppies have not rediscovered breast feeding Ms. Eshelman.
However, health research has validated that for an infant breast feeding is
the best route to go for the development and health of the infant. In
the case of the mother there is some early evidence that it may be
protective against the development of breast cancer. Considering the
appalling infant mortality rates in the United States of America you would
think that you would be waving your flags and baking your pies in favour of re-establishing breast
feeding as the main source of infant nutrtion.

For those of us in grass shacks, throwing excrement onto the
street, and running around in loin cloths next to our igloos in Sweden,
Canada, and Denmark your remarks recall the somewhat judgemental attitude
on the part of what is hopefully a minority of Americans. As the global
village and understanding increases through the internet highway,
hopefully such woefully ignorant remarks will become a thing of the past.

If a democracy and a nation is to remain great perhaps the
generation that is aging should consider supporting the generation that
is up an coming. If your remarks about yuppies reflect the reality of
your younger generation than your nation is indeed in poor shape...it
doesn't sound like there will be suitable citizens available to bring the
country into the 21rst Century. If you long for the return of the
previous decade of wife and mother at home and out of the public domain
then I guess you'd better run home away from the profession of journalism
in which you are engaged. One can't have it both ways.

Hopefully, the law in your state will pass..it sounds like you
could use some exercise...both in body and mind. Regards.
