I agree with Nikki re babies needing access to their hands. (I ask mothers
where babies hands are in their prenatal ultrasound scans.)

However, I do find the 5 S's to be very helpful, especially in the hospital
situation where babies are forever being examined, heel sticked etc. A
disorganised baby does not breastfeed well. I do strongly emphasize that
it's only for really distressed babies and if they should fall asleep, I
suggest that the blanket is gently loosened so that baby has access to a
hand when he wakes up.

Mothers around the world have been using these techniques instinctively -
especially the Swinging and Shushing - in fact after swaddling the baby I
ask mothers what to do next (swing) and what to say (shush) - they always
know! A good time to emphasize that they do have instincts!
