Dear Dr Wight and others who specialize in preemies,

Can someone help me with the safety of herbal galactogogues used with moms of
preemies, specifically blessed thistle and fenugreek?

To be specific; baby was born at 31 weeks, 1# 13 oz, SGA preemie. Now at 3
weeks mom is only pumping 1/2 oz every 2 hours, I suggesed fenugreek and
blessed thistle, but neonatologist has asked me:

1. What is the safety of these herbs for a small preemie?
2. What are the levels in the milk?
3. and what are the possible effects on the baby?

None of the sources I have give any information about this.
Where can I find more information? Does this information exist?
Many thanks,
Jane Bradshaw RN, BSN, IBCLC
