Hello All!

I would appreciate a little help. I have been talking to the mother of a now
5 mo boy almost since birth. Baby has been very fussy, crabby, crying,
screaming at times... Doesn't sleep much either. Stomach contents seem to
back up to about his throat and he is swallowing hard quite a bit.

Please bare with me as I'm not from a medical background. This baby has been
diagnosed with reflux. Upper GI showed the sphincter stays wide open. He has
been put on Zantac. Mother has noticed that his stool has changed to very
yellow water which is readily absorbed into his diaper. At times the stool
is of a gravy or light cream soup consistency with most if it absorbed into
the diaper. Mother has noticed spots, and sometimes small streaks, of what
she thinks may be blood. The gastroenterologist has discounted that the
medication could be the problem even though the mother took baby off the med
and stool returned to normal BF stool and reverted to the watery substance
when put back on the Zantac.

The gastroenterologist has sent her a blood detection test that she is to use
on 3 diapers. He told her that if it detects blood, she is to stop BF and he
will put baby on a very "SPECIAL," very expensive formula. Baby may not be
able to tolerate her breastmilk! (This is where I wanted to tell her to run
screaming into the night!) I guess that's why the baby has more than doubled
his birth weight and is just getting over his first cold. The things we
learn.

My question to you all: Have any of you run into this type of a reaction to
this medication? I've come up empty.

TYIA
