Wendy, your point is very valid and this is why our one hour class is
geared to surviving the hospital stay. We tell mom such things as how to
latch on properly because they get such incorrect information. We tell
them about avoiding bottles unless "medically necessary" because they
are pushed to give bottles. We talk about diaper counts and weight loss
or gain so they can understand how intake is important. We talk about
how active sucking means milk transfer means abundant bowel movements
because so many have childbirth interventions and sleepy babies. We talk
about stomach size because the nurses are feeding such large amounts on
day one and two by bottle. We talk about the baby's instincts and
abilities because no one else tells them this and what little
information they do get is contradictory to mother nature. We have come
to see that focusing on advantages is not as important as the basics of
breastfeeding because they all know BF is best but they don't know how
to breastfeed.
