We have a mom who was very sick (just high fever post-op) and her blood
cultures grew out E.Coli. She is better now. Of course, while I was off, the
baby was being formula fed. Now, we're hoping to get breastfeeding going
ASAP. I'm not too sure how committed she really is, though.

My question is: Could this mom have been nursing while she was sicker? Every
antibiotic she was on is okay in breastfeeding (I checked). The other staff
was having her pump and dump. In retrospect, could we have been feeding this
milk to the baby or at least keeping it?

I need some input from any of you who have time ASAP. I'll most likely be
working with this woman after her discharge today.

For my own future reference (I'll do research myself) could this woman have
been nursing all the time (as long as she felt up to it)? I sort of walked
into this situation cold last evening (after being off for three days) and I
wasn't prepared to deal properly with this. I want to make sure that I
educate everyone about this so if and when we encounter this scenario again,
we'll be on top of things.
