I've been 'lurking' for some time now so it's time to come out of hiding
and introduce myself. I am an Australian midwife (& IBCLC of 9 years)
working in Domiciliary (ie.homecare) seeing parents & babies up till Day 10
or so.These babies may range from prems to fullterm babies.
More importantly I am mother to 3 very 'active' boys, ages 11, 4 and 20
months, all breastfed.
This may seem like a very basic question but I was wondering what others'
practises were regarding how often to weigh babies postnatally. Our
practise is to weigh after birth then second daily thereafter till
discharge to the Maternal and Child Health Nurse which is usually around
Day 7 to 10. I am aware that other homecare services (in Melbourne) only
weigh babies this often if there is a problem.
I personally feel weighing every 2 or 3 days is adequate as it allows for
early identification (and therefore management) of problems. Is this the
most common practise elsewhere?
I am interested in what others practice.
Cheers
Karen Clements
