Lactnetters,
The lactnet discussions are priceless to those of us who are learning.
Thank-you to everyone who thoughtfully contributes. When I read the long
history with endless gadgets, machines, schedules and check-ups, I though
Whew! Both for mom and for me, the helper, trying to learn how to apply all
that. As a lay helper, distant from professional help, I found most mothers
I tried to refer won't go. So we rely on what we have. Many have said they
can't afford a pump or an LC.
It was as if a weight was lifted when I read the UK revision, "We'd tuck 'em
up in bed." Heh! So would I!
When asking how we can change birth practices to support bf, it would be
neglect to avoid saying, "take it out of hospitals!" It is called thinking
outside the box. (A large, concrete box) If we say let's make changes as
long as we do everything the same, we won't get far. Women voting with
their feet will change hospitals. It was one of many good ideas. It does
not insult all nurses.
Most of us have suggested cup-feeding or something and seen a mother look at
you as if you were insane. We need to know many ways. We need to know that
if we can't find an answer, praising and empowering mother, and maybe
tucking them into bed is a good start while we are off in a scholarly
search. Personally, I love it when mama comes back, grinning, and teaches
me.
Respectfully, Pam Easterday LLLL [log in to unmask]
