Dear Friends:
I am perplexed as to why someone would prescribe this for a prolapsed
uterus. Methergine is given for uterine bleeding after delivery, and I have some
vague memory that it constricts a different part of the uterus than pitocin
does. Maybe it shuts down the lower uterine segment, while pitocin works on the
pacemaker at the fundus? Rachel?
It is also used for headaches.
There was a midwife I knew that used to routinely prescribe methergine
(ergotamine) tablets for all vaginal deliveries. The women hated it, it made the
afterbirth pains SO bad.
I just did a search for ergotamine and uterine prolapse and didn't find
anything.
    warmly,
