It's better than assault, which is what I would call it if someone
formula fed my baby without my consent or knowledge. Someone in my
circle was babysitting another friend's breastfed baby and did nurse her
without specifically discussing it ahead of time, and it did create some
weird feelings between them for a time, but ultimately my friend
understood that it was an act of kindness. My gut feeling is that the
milk of an average nursing mom is way safer than the average bottle of
formula, but it would still upset me if another mother nursed my baby
without me knowing about it. As someone who's very reluctant to care
for a nursing infant because I don't want to deal with bottles or a
crying baby who really just needs to nurse, I do understand that urge to
make it all better with breastmilk, but it isn't my place to do so.
It's unfortunate that the incident had to make it that far, with the
idea of unclean, unsafe breastmilk being what sticks in readers' minds.
