Carbatrol should actually be safer than tegretol, because the blood
level stays more even, so less is transferred over time.

I suspect you are confusing extended release drugs with drugs with long
half lives.  Drugs with long half lives persist in the body longer, and
can accumulate with repeated doses, possibly causing accumulation in the
breastfed baby as well.
