Kathy has described a situation where she has moved to the nursery and is being told that she must hand out formula discharge bags as a condition of employment. Two responses come to mind; First, check with HR as to what you signed when you?became an employee of the institution. Does any of it require you to market products to patients? (HIPAA defines commercial bag distribution as marketing). Second, most hospitals have a form to fill out for conscientious objection to a procedure or action that is counter to your ethical principles. See if you can fill one out stating that formula bags distribution and the use of formula company materials violates your professional code of ethics.
