I, too, have had just one premie on Neocate formula. He started out as
a
Micro-premie, came home at 4 months of age. Mom had been pumping and
providing breastmilk for bottle feedings. We worked together and got
him transitioned to the breast, but constipation was a constant problem.
He had started out with it and it got worse. He was straining
constantly to pass stool. Since he was also hypertensive, this was bad
news. I expected him to settle down once he was on only breastmilk, no
fortifier, but it didn't happen. He was seen by a pediatric GI
specialist who felt it was an allergic response after scoping his gut
and finding it very congested and swollen. We went through an
elimination diet for mom until she was eating nothing but home grown
fruits and vegetables, but it didn't help. So he was taken off breast
and put on Neocate. There was an immediate change in this baby and he
could stool on his own with minimal straining. He is now 9 months old
and gaining well. Vegetables and fruits have been successfully started,
but even rice cereal caused constipation.
