I don't use an SNS often, but when I do, I now prefer starting with it this
way.  Susan Berger, you maybe could fill us in on what your mentors do and
why.

It was Susan who first encouraged me to try it, and I did so over the phone
with an adoptive mom who said latch-on was no problem unless they were using
the SNS, in which case it took several tries.  She tried running the tube
over the baby's tongue (instead of under the palate), and said she'd *never*
go back to doing it the other way.

For those of us who use the breast to scoop or pry or widen the baby's mouth
or to keep the tongue down or to climb the Matterhorn or any such
lower-jaw-lands-first motion, having the tube under the palate goes against
the grain.  The tube tends to flip out of the way at the last moment rather
than slip right into the mouth.  Running the tube over the tongue means the
same motion that scoops or pries or widens the mouth also gets the tubing
well-placed right along with the nipple.

A poor explanation, but I'm feeling very sorry for myself right now; I just
saw my baby off for a year of work in Colorado before starting college next
fall.  My days as a mother of children who live at home ended today, and I'm
*not happy*.  Happy for him, of course, but not for me.
