Speaking of burnout...

I am co-chair of our Breastfeeding Committee at my hospital where I work as
a nicu nurse. I am also an IBCLC. In developing a reformatted
breastfeeding policy the coordinator and co-chair of the committee of our
Lactation Center put into the policy that breastfeeding mothers would not be
given the formula gift bags routinely. They would have to ask for them.
The department director went ballistic..how could we not give the gift bags!
Those mothers would compare with mothers from the other major competitor
and decide our hospital wasn't as generous as the other hospital. There was
nothing that that the coordinator could say to appease except she is hoping
for a grant to buy other diaper bags to give to the breastfeeding mothers.
It was quite the heated discussion. Another issue that enters into it is
that all the peds want the bag given out so they can tell mothers at 3am
that it is ok to give a bottle of formula! Even with the WHO and AAP
recommendations being what they are.

Carolyn
