Another testimonial: primip, delivered by emergency CS for infection after
prolonged rupture of membranes, baby transferred to NICU for antibiotic
treatment. Mother has visited baby in NICU and held her, baby not
interested in latching. Due to an oversight mother has not begun pumping
until about 18 hours post CS. When baby is 24 hours old she is brought to
mother's room for a 'visit' to last 45 minutes.
We waste no time getting baby undressed except for diaper and placed on
mother's bare chest, after checking with NICU nurse to make sure there is no
reason why we should refrain from this. Light blanket laid over baby.
First, she cries for a minute or two, then cuddles up and relaxes. Parents
both entranced. Family is left alone with offer of assistance if baby
starts to root or seems unhappy. They ring after 15 minutes, but by the
time I get there baby has settled again. After about 20 more minutes, they
ring once more, and another staff member goes in, moves baby slightly
whereupon baby latches well and starts to suckle. When NICU nurse comes to
get baby, baby is suckling on other side, having been moved by parents.
Nurse waits until baby finished feeding because 'it just looked too
wonderful to interrupt'. Less than an hour later she is back, because baby
is cueing interest and hunger again.
I really think the nurse was powerfully affected by the sight of mother and
baby together, doing what they were meant to do, and that is why she made
the extra trip back when baby started showing cues.
Again, if you haven't had the opportunity to try this, then seek one out as
soon as you can. It's almost like being at a birth; the love hormones will
nearly drown you.
