In our lactation service we are struggling to write a policy/guideline that
supports how we recommend to supplement (or not supplement) newborns that
have weight loss. We look at the global picture of nursing, output, milk
supply, ect., but do not have any research to give us support for
supplementing (or not supplementing) each infant, since each case is so
individual. In surveying other hospitals, none have any guidelines, or can
point to any research that supports what they are doing. We are hoping to
find research that supports medically indicated need for supplement (as I'm
sure you will all agree). If the answer is in the archives what would the
key words be? I am hoping to connect with a lactation service that has
taken a bold step and actually written a policy to this effect. Thank you
for your time in advance.
Tremendously Yours,
Julie Freeman RN, IBCLC
