It DID make ME cry! I left my son for 4.5 days when he was 20 months old for an annual conference for work. I had just started the job and didn't know at that time that the conference wasn't obligatory (some of my co-workers only went every two years!). I also didn't know that I could have taken my mom AND my baby with me so that I could have been nursing him at lunch and at night (at that conference and subsequent ones, there were always lots of people who brought their whole families with them!) I really wish I had asked some questions about these things, but my co-workers already thought I was crazy for nursing a nearly 2 year old. At least I was able to pump in my hotel room at night and during our lunch breaks; and, despite my fears that this separation would result in him weaning, he was anxious to nurse as soon as he spotted me... and continued to do so quite regularly for the next 2 years. ;-)

I think I'll ask the writer of this article if I can put a link to it on my Parenting Resources page in the section on Working and Breastfeeding.

this was a powerful essay, in the New York Times, I hope it changes things.
